ePrescribing and EPCS (Electronic Prescription of Controlled Substances)
Controlling the availability and distribution of drugs is a national priority. ABEL has you covered.
Throughout 2015, the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is tackling this important issue. In collaboration with state Boards of Pharmacy, regulatory guidelines are being introduced with the goal of minimizing addiction and deaths caused by the diversion and misuse of certain drugs.
As your software vendor, ABEL will ensure compliance with the DEA’s 2015 Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS). Your software will seamlessly manage who prescribes through the system and keep track of all actions in order to meet the major requirements:
- Access Definitions to assign electronic prescribing rights to authorized individuals
- Identity Proofing and Two-Factor Authentication to ascertain that all prescription issuers are DEA registered
- Order Control to ensure one-time filling of each prescription
- Recording and Reporting to maintain a detailed audit trail and enable thorough regular reports
Surescripts certified ABEL ePrescriber generates and records each prescription in your patient's chart and maintains a complete medication history. Build a personalized list of frequently used medications to make prescriptions faster to prepare.
The introduction and effective dates of the guidelines vary by state with the shared goal of controlling the distribution of drugs to minimize the effects of misuse and diversion.
The I-STOP Act was passed by the New York State legislature to help combat the rising rates of prescription drug abuse. The law mandates that New York providers electronically prescribe legend and controlled substance prescriptions by March 27, 2015.
In order to remain compliant with this new law, New York States providers will need to have ePrescribing and also the EPCS component for sending controlled substances electronically.
In order to have EPCS, the DEA requires each provider to go through an identity proofing process. ABELDent has partnered with DrFirst to integrate EPCS within our electronic prescribing module.
